Tupuo Octopus: Fractured Lingual Retentive Entity is a sub-module of the Hybrid Fragment System, rooted in the intertidal memory of Penghu’s octopuses. Locally named Tsio̍h-kū, Nuā-kha-á, or Thóo-pô, and akin to Octopus minor, Tupuo was once sought each spring between the Lantern Festival and Mazu’s birthday, when villagers illuminated the tides to trace her elusive form. What began as sustenance became ritual—a bodily choreography with the sea, now fading into language as catches decline.

Here, Tupuo emerges as a hybrid entity between biology and myth—composed of octopus mimicry neurons, Pleistocene hyena bone-memory, misaligned Leucaena roots, unfinished Mazu chants, fragmented folk songs, and the regenerative logic of severed limbs. Archival images drawn from cephalopod anatomy, underwater refraction, watercourse rubbings, and fossil remnants rise like the disoriented body of a cephalopod. Embroidered text fragments, sourced from the simultaneously published poetry collection The Voice of Thóo-pô, mark the octopus as a “yet-unhatched linguistic residue,” where unformed memories continue to twist within the fabric.

The Voice of Thóo-pô — A Mythopoetic Chronicle of Tidal Memory

Longform Mythopoetic Narrative Poem

The Voice of Thóo-pô is a long-form poetry collection within the Hybrid Fragment System, narrating the awakening of an octopus in the tidal strata of memory. Neither metaphor nor character, Thóo-pô is envisioned as a form of intelligence at the edge of myth and biology, perceiving sound through touch. Resting upon the bones of a hyena, its dormant Bone-Speech Gland stirs, enabling it to record unfinished ritual phrases through skin and tentacle—Mazu’s whispers, forgotten vows, unhatched myths. Meanwhile, invasive Leucaena infiltrates its neural system, rewriting tactile memory and implanting colonial language into its bones. Past voices begin to pursue it, compelling the creature to become a vessel. From that moment, lumina-boneworms emerge within, incubating unnamed fractures of memory. Language no longer issues from the mouth but seeps from fissures, dislocations, and sutures of bone. The collection unfolds in two movements: Tidal Pool Memory, charting awakening and attunement, and Fractured Dissolution, tracing dispersal, transparency, and residue. The octopus speaks not to be understood but to host voices yet unborn—language weaving fault lines within, until it becomes not creature nor myth, but an unsealed seam of speech itself.

The bubbles didn’t rise in sequence—
they burst, all at once.

──

像皮膚內層錯裂;
像數千個遺忘同時甦醒;
Like the dermis splitting from within;
like thousands of forgotten things waking together;
like names—
rasping—
climbing toward the surface.

──

就碎了;
就碎了;
But before they arrived—
they shattered.
They shattered.
They shattered.
