Tidal Spirits is a sub module within my long term project Hybrid Fragment System.
The work is inspired by an ancient harbor in Tainan that lost its navigational function due to sediment accumulation. As I walked along the former harbor line now covered by mudflats, geological cross sections, cedar plank walls of the old Qiaonan Street, ceramic fragments carried away and returned by the tide, and the scent of medicinal herbs all appeared as scattered units. They drift close to one another while remaining severed.

The vanished sounds of tides and the harbor scents buried within geological layers, under specific wind directions and angles of moonlight, seemed to extend peat like tendrils toward me. Within this landscape that was once sea and is no longer sea, they continue to vibrate with a slow and profound tidal pulse.

I call this entity Tidal Spirits. It forms within silt, composed partly of residual landscape memory and partly of grievances and fragments drawn from local folk legends surrounding the Screw Pine Maiden. It murmurs with wind and sediment, attempting to reassemble forgotten shipping routes and waterways.
